Make Em Laugh with Larry Joe Campbell

The concept behind “Make ‘Em Laugh” is to suggest ideas for parents to get out, get laughing and restore their sanity. You have 5 children, how in the hell do you and your wife spend quality time together?

Obviously much of our time is spent with the children. They range in ages 5-10, so we are very busy and greatly enjoy watching them and participating in their lives. That said, we've recently found the need to get time to ourselves. It's imperative that a couple find that time to be alone and reconnect or else you risk essentially becoming business partners and you simply wind up managing your business (in this case, your family). In order to make the time, you need to make it a priority and make the time. It's as simple as that. We never took our honeymoon, so just before Christmas, we flew to
England. Just the two of us. We had NEVER done that before. It was odd at first, but now we are committed to doing it in the future.

All pregnant chicks watch episodes of A Baby Story right up until delivery. You earned loyal fans by sharing the birth of your twins on that show. How did your wife feel about giving birth on TV?

I would walk into our living room and my wife would be crying and I would worry and ask "What is wrong?" And she would just point to the screen. "A Baby Story" would be on and my wife would just be sobbing to an episode. She LOVED that show when she was pregnant. We were both comfortable sharing our story during the births of our twins. We had lost twins prior to the births of Maddie and Max. Many couples have experienced that loss. Hopefully the episode was as healing for those other couples as it was for us.

You and your wife are in a buddy cop movie, are you the good cop or the bad cop?

You would think I would be the good cop, the "aw shucks, I know you're mom is getting bent out of shape" cop, but I'm definitely the bad cop. Peggy has way more patience than I do.

Every comic actor drools at the opportunity to land a Farrelly brothers film. How did you become involved in this project and how long did you do a happy tap dance?

Peter and Bobby are the best. I'm a huge fan of their comedy. You'll have some scenes that are just CRAZY, but their films always have a great deal of heart. I don't think it actually hit me until after we wrapped. Then I allowed myself to look back and say "You were just in a Farrelly Brothers film. That's SO
COOL."

What is your most memorable moment from the shoot?

Two things stick out. The first is the dichotomy of Peter and Bobby's leadership. They made the set such a fun place, but they are extremely hard workers. The other is the relatioships that were made and manifested during the shoot. A film can be a lonely place. It's so much different than a sitcom in which you're constantly with your cast rehearsing and rehearsing and rehearsing. In a film you can spend a lot of time alone in your trailer or hotel room, but we all connected right away and hung out together throughout the shoot. I quickly made some great, lasting friendships on that shoot.

What are your thoughts on the concept of a Hall Pass?

I get it. I understand it. It's so easy to get busy with our lives. If we are not constantly trying to reconnect with our lover then we lose touch and start connecting with something else. The biggest example is we become determined to be amazing parents. If we no longer get the attention from our spouse, we pour the attention we were returning into our kids. Then the relationship of the parents is really in trouble. We need to constantly provide that attention to our mate, then we can successfully raise our kids. The problem is most of us view a marriage as something magical--that it shouldn't need constant work if it's meant to be. That's so wrong. We need to constantly, constantly give our spouse attention. It's a lot of work, frankly.

Your first TV role was on Friends, as an homage to that show, which celebrities are on you and your wife’s “laminated card”?

My first role was actually on a show called "Stark Raving Mad" with Tony Shalhoub and Neil Patrick Harris. I must have missed the "laminated card" episode 'cause I'm not sure what that means. If it means "what celebrity do you dig," Peggy calls certain guys her "cutie pa-tuties". If I'm getting to go on a date with a famous person it's going to be with my favorite athletes like Barry Sanders and Magic Johnson. Sorry, I guess I'm getting old.

Parent Pitch: Why is Hall Pass worth the sitter?

A) It's funny. It's really funny.

It has a lot of heart. It's sincere.

C) Again, we need these moments to constantly reconnect with our spouses. It's a must. What better way than to go see a super funny flick that raises all these questions for a married couple, but ultimately celebrates that relationship.
